The Health feature in ChatGPT is now available to U.S. users. People can choose to securely connect Apple Health and supported medical records so that ChatGPT can help them understand their information in context, track changes over time, and have more personalized, informed conversations. The experience was shaped by feedback from early testers and gives users full control over what they connect and when ChatGPT can access it.
Every week, over 300 million people ask ChatGPT health-related questions-ranging from interpreting lab results and preparing for doctor visits to understanding medical advice and building healthier routines. However, the context behind those questions is typically spread across patient portals, medical records, apps, and wearables, making it hard to see or act on the full picture.
With the user's permission, ChatGPT can now draw on relevant connected Health information to help compare a new result with prior tests, summarize changes since a last appointment, or explore how sleep, activity, and workouts relate to daily routines. This reduces the need to repeatedly gather, upload, or re-explain the same details, helping people feel more informed, ask better questions, and take a more active role in their health-while supporting, not replacing, care from medical professionals.
OpenAI is continuing to improve the models powering health conversations so ChatGPT can reason more carefully across complex details, explain health information clearly, ask for missing context, and recognize when professional care may be needed. GPT-5.5 Instant brought frontier health intelligence to all free users, and GPT-5.6 Sol builds on that progress with even stronger performance on more complex questions.
The Health feature is built with layered privacy and security safeguards. Connected medical records and Apple Health information-and conversations that use it-are not used to train OpenAI's foundation models or target ads. The rollout is beginning for logged-in ChatGPT users aged 18 and older in the U.S. on web and iOS across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans. Users can open Health from the sidebar in ChatGPT to get started. Health is not yet available in Codex.

With permission, ChatGPT can consider medications, lab results, recent visits, sleep, and activity alongside goals and context the user shares. For example, ChatGPT can factor in a dietary restriction when helping choose a restaurant, or a recent injury when planning lower-impact weekend activities. Users can ask follow-up questions, add context, or correct information that is incomplete or outdated.
The Health section in the left sidebar remains the central hub for connecting and managing information, viewing recent data and trends, exploring suggested prompts, browsing synced records, and returning to past health conversations.
Improving Health Intelligence with Physicians
OpenAI uses dedicated training to improve the models behind health conversations. GPT-5.5 Instant, available on the Free plan, has made meaningful gains in recognizing when urgent care may be needed, asking for relevant context, explaining uncertainty, and making complex information easier to understand. On OpenAI's most challenging health evaluations, it performed at a level comparable to frontier Thinking models at the time of evaluation.
GPT-5.6 Sol, available to paid users, is OpenAI's strongest model yet for health. It builds on prior progress with stronger performance on tasks requiring reasoning across complex details, clear communication, and careful judgment. It can help explain a visit note in plain language, understand how lab results have changed over time, consider factors across options a doctor discussed, or prepare questions for a follow-up appointment.
To measure progress, OpenAI works with hundreds of physicians worldwide to develop realistic health scenarios and detailed rubrics defining what a strong response should include. These evaluations assess accuracy, safety, communication, context awareness, completeness, and appropriate escalation. Every GPT-5.6 model outperformed GPT-5.5 on HealthBench Professional, an evaluation of AI performance on challenging health tasks.
Physicians also extensively tested Health in ChatGPT before release, helping measure and improve real-world model performance and safety with connected health data. While these results represent meaningful progress and OpenAI is continuously improving its models, ChatGPT can still make mistakes and does not replace the care and judgment of qualified medical professionals. Users are encouraged to verify important information and discuss medical decisions with their healthcare provider.
Built with Privacy, Security, and Control
All ChatGPT conversations are encrypted at rest and in transit, and information connected in Health receives additional encryption protections.
Connected Health information is not used to train OpenAI's foundation models or target ads. Connected medical records and Apple Health information, along with conversations that use it, are excluded from foundation model training and ad targeting, regardless of the user's model-training setting. Conversations that do not use this data follow standard ChatGPT model-training setting choices, which can be changed at any time in Settings > Data Controls.
Users decide when ChatGPT can use connected Health information. By default, ChatGPT asks permission before using connected medical records and Apple Health information to personalize a response. Users can approve each request individually or choose to always allow access. This setting can be changed anytime in Settings > Plugins > Health.
Health information can be disconnected at any time. Users can disconnect accounts in Health > Accounts. When disconnected, data synced from that source is deleted from OpenAI's systems within 30 days. Information already included in conversation history remains until those conversations are deleted.
Memory remains under user control. Memories can be created from Health conversations to personalize future chats, but memories are not created directly from connected medical records and Apple Health information. Users who prefer conversations without creating memories can use Temporary Chat or turn memory off in Settings > Memory.
Additional safeguards protect sensitive sharing. Before ChatGPT takes an action in another connected plugin that could disclose Health information-such as sending a running partner a training plan based on Apple Health data-additional safeguards verify that the sharing matches the user's request. For some sensitive actions, ChatGPT may ask for confirmation before proceeding. OpenAI continues to test these safeguards through dedicated red-team exercises focused on connected Health information.
How to Connect and Use Health Information
Users can ask health questions in ChatGPT without connecting anything. To use the Health feature and get responses grounded in personal information, users can connect Apple Health, supported medical records from U.S. hospital systems, One Medical, or Function Health.
Connect Health Information
Open Health from the sidebar or More menu in ChatGPT and select "Get started." ChatGPT will guide users through securely connecting their health information. Once connected, information begins syncing, which may take a few minutes. While it syncs, additional accounts can be connected or users can return later.
Using a Wearable or Another Health App
If a user uses a wearable, fitness, or nutrition app that shares data with Apple Health, they should make sure sharing is turned on. Once Apple Health is connected to ChatGPT, ChatGPT can use the information that app makes available through Apple Health when permitted. Available information varies by app and metric, and some proprietary scores may not transfer.
Review and Update Relevant Health Details
After connecting, users can review conditions and medications, remove anything no longer relevant, and add details that may be missing, including family health history. Connected information may not always be complete or current-for example, a medication may remain listed after being discontinued-so users should tell ChatGPT when something changes and check important details against the original source.
Bring Health Context into Conversations
Once information is synced, users can ask questions anywhere in ChatGPT. When relevant, ChatGPT may use Health information based on the user's permissions. By default, ChatGPT asks before using this information. Users can allow access once or choose to always allow it, and can change this setting anytime in Settings > Plugins > Health. Users can also add @Health to a message to explicitly request health context.
Explore and Manage Health Information
Users can return to the Health section anytime to see recent data and trends, find suggested prompts, browse synced records, revisit past conversations, and manage connected accounts.
