In fewer than 200 days since its launch, ChatGPT Ads has crossed $1 billion in annualized revenue run rate. The platform now serves tens of thousands of advertisers and continues its global expansion. Starting later that day, advertisers gained the ability to purchase ChatGPT ads directly through Ads Manager in India, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa.

Advertising serves as one component of OpenAI's diversified business model, complementing consumer subscriptions, enterprise products, and usage-based APIs. These combined offerings provide people, developers, and businesses with flexible ways to access OpenAI's products, including an ad-supported free tier that helps keep ChatGPT available to over 1 billion weekly active users.

Where Decisions Take Shape

Users come to ChatGPT with specific goals-whether selecting business software, learning a language, planning a home renovation, job hunting, or picking up a new hobby. They describe what they want to achieve, their priorities, and their constraints. ChatGPT then helps them frame decisions, set criteria, understand alternatives, and move toward action. Discovery, consideration, and decision-making converge in a single experience.

ChatGPT Ads enables marketers to contribute useful, relevant information within this experience. OpenAI's ads system leverages the context of the current conversation to display ads aligned with what a user is exploring. Depending on the country and a user's settings, the system may also draw on context from the user's broader ChatGPT usage, allowing ads to reflect both the immediate query and, where enabled, broader interests and preferences.

Building Around OpenAI's Principles

Guided by OpenAI's ads principles, the company has been intentional in how it builds and scales the advertising platform. Protecting the trust users place in ChatGPT remains the top priority.

Ads in ChatGPT are always clearly labeled and kept separate from ChatGPT's responses. Advertising does not influence ChatGPT's answers. Advertisers are not given access to users' private conversations, and users retain control over how their ad experience is personalized.

Throughout the global rollout, the metrics OpenAI tracks across trust, relevance, and overall experience have remained strong, providing confidence to continue expanding while learning and improving.

From Early Pilot to Global Platform

ChatGPT Ads is now available in over 40 countries through the OpenAI Ads Solutions team and its agency and technology partners. Self-service access to ChatGPT Ads launched that day across India, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa.

OpenAI's client base is increasingly global. Advertisers outside the United States represent a growing share of revenue, and many of the largest clients now use ChatGPT Ads to reach potential customers across multiple markets.

The advertiser base is also broadening. OpenAI started with a managed-sales, agency, and partner-led model and has since expanded its ecosystem to over 50 technology and measurement partners.

The introduction of Ads Manager in May opened the platform to small and medium-sized businesses, which now account for a meaningful portion of the business. OpenAI aims to make advertising in ChatGPT more accessible to SMBs and startups, giving businesses of all sizes an opportunity to reach customers as they explore options and make decisions.

At the same time, ChatGPT Ads has matured into a more sophisticated advertising platform. CPC and outcome-optimized bidding now make up the majority of campaigns, while Pixel and Conversions API have become key foundations for measurement and optimization. Features such as product feeds, platform and geographic targeting, and custom audiences help advertisers reach the most relevant customers.

These improvements are delivering real results for advertisers and partners. Recent examples include an ecommerce advertiser achieving a 3x return on ad spend over 28 days, and a technology partner reporting that over 80% of ad-driven ChatGPT traffic comes from new customers.

What's Next

OpenAI's focus remains on expanding access to AI while staying true to its principles.

The next phase of growth will bring ChatGPT Ads to additional markets and introduce new formats, objectives, buying options, and measurement capabilities. OpenAI also plans to explore new ways for businesses to interact with consumers more natively within ChatGPT.

As more people turn to ChatGPT to explore needs, evaluate options, and make decisions, OpenAI sees an opportunity to help them discover products and services-and to help businesses of every size grow and thrive.
