Anthropic Partners with UK to Integrate AI Assistant into GOV.UK

Anthropic has been selected by the UK government to develop an AI assistant for GOV.UK that will help citizens navigate government services, starting with employment support. The partnership includes knowledge transfer to government staff and represents part of Anthropic's growing investment in the UK's AI leadership position.

Anthropic has been chosen by the UK's Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) to develop and test an AI-powered assistant for GOV.UK. The assistant will guide citizens through government services and provide personalized recommendations. The first application focuses on employment services, supporting job seekers with career guidance, training opportunities, and resource navigation.

This collaboration stems from a Memorandum of Understanding established between Anthropic and the UK government in February 2025, aimed at examining how cutting-edge AI could enhance public services for British citizens.

Safety-First AI Integration for Government Services

Following the MOU signing, Anthropic and DSIT have worked together to determine safe and efficient methods for implementing AI in government operations. The GOV.UK assistant, built on Claude technology, represents a key milestone in this effort. The system functions as an agent that goes beyond simple query responses to actively assist users through government procedures with customized support.

Pip White, who leads Anthropic's UK, Ireland and Northern Europe operations, expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with the UK government to support the AI Opportunities Action Plan. The partnership aligns with Anthropic's core mission by showing how advanced AI can be responsibly implemented for public good, establishing benchmarks for governmental AI integration in citizen services.

A key objective involves developing AI and safety capabilities within the UK government. Engineers from Anthropic will collaborate directly with government employees and developers at the Government Digital Service during the project, aiming to enable independent system maintenance by the UK government.

Supporting UK Job Seekers

The GOV.UK assistant will first concentrate on helping individuals seeking employment or returning to work. The system will deliver tailored career guidance, facilitate access to training programs, clarify available support options, and direct users to appropriate services according to their specific situations. The assistant will preserve conversation history across sessions, eliminating the need for users to restart each interaction. Users maintain complete authority over their information-including what data is stored and the option to withdraw participation-with all personal data managed according to UK data protection regulations.

The initiative employs DSIT's "Scan, Pilot, Scale" methodology, implementing a structured, gradual strategy that enables both the government and Anthropic to experiment, evaluate, and refine the system before expanding deployment.

Anthropic's Investment in UK AI Leadership

This collaboration demonstrates Anthropic's expanding commitment to the United Kingdom. The company is dedicated to advancing the UK's position as an international AI leader, with increasing involvement across various sectors.

Anthropric maintains ongoing cooperation with the UK AI Safety Institute for model testing and assessment, ensuring that jointly developed protection measures and evaluation standards guide Claude's implementation in government and other sectors. This partnership represents Anthropic's sustained dedication to creating AI systems that combine capability with safety and reliability.

Anthropric's London location houses an expanding group of AI researchers and continues growing with additional departments such as go-to-market strategies, applied AI, policy development, and more. Chris Ciauri, Managing Director International, noted that Anthropic's UK team significantly contributes to advancing frontier models and revolutionizing both public services and the wider British commercial environment, working with emerging companies like incident.io and Wordsmith as well as established organizations including WPP and the London Stock Exchange Group.

Global Public Service AI Implementation

The DSIT project exemplifies an expanding pattern of governmental and institutional partnerships with Anthropic for public service AI deployment. Within the UK, Anthropic collaborates with the London School of Economics to give students Claude access. In Iceland, the company has established a partnership with the Ministry of Education and Children for one of the initial nationwide AI education programs, providing educators throughout the nation with Claude to assist in lesson planning and educational support. Additionally, Anthropic recently formed a partnership with the Rwandan Government to deliver AI education to numerous students nationwide.
