Anthropic Invites Life Sciences Researchers to Apply as Guest Investigators

Anthropic is accepting proposals from life sciences researchers at academic, nonprofit, and government labs for 8–12 week collaborations using Claude on biology and drug discovery questions. Anthropic will cover model costs, and investigators keep rights to their data.

Anthropic is inviting members of the life sciences community to apply to collaborate with Anthropic on special projects. Anthropic wants proposals from principal investigators and their research groups at academic institutions, nonprofits, or government labs. These groups should want to use Claude to explore key questions in causal human biology, structural and computational molecular biology, medicinal chemistry, drug discovery, and clinical science.

Proposals can be submitted through the guest investigator program page.

Over 8 to 12 weeks, guest investigators will work directly with Anthropic researchers on a problem they care about. Together they will produce the analyses, artifacts, and tools that are most useful for the investigators' work. Anthropic's team will run Anthropic's models and harnesses at no cost to the investigators.

Anthropic and the investigators will work together to publish the outputs and open-source the related data and code. Guest investigators keep the rights to their data throughout the project. They also hold the rights to any independent follow-on research that grows out of the collaboration.

Anthropic is looking for applicants who can clearly explain how they would benefit from working directly with Anthropic's researchers. Applicants should also make a reasonable case that their outputs can be produced within the 8- to 12-week period. Examples include preliminary discoveries, answers to open questions, open-source datasets, or public resources. Some projects may be able to extend beyond the initial period.

Anthropic recognizes that validating results for most open problems will take much longer. It is seeking proposals that can produce some preliminary evidence in a fairly short time.

Anthropic is not asking guest investigators to hand over their data, either in the application or during the collaboration. Applicants should include only publicly available information in their application materials.

Applications will be open for about 14 days. Anthropic aims to notify selected participants by email about 14 days after applications close. Anthropic hopes to expand this effort in the future as it learns more about how best to support the scientific community.

The program is one of several initiatives through which Anthropic is investing more heavily in the life sciences and the wider scientific research community. Scientists who want direct access to Anthropic's most capable publicly available models for biology can apply to the Life Sciences Verification Program. Anthropic also continues to support researchers through its AI for Science initiative, which gives scientists Claude credits to speed up their progress toward scientific discoveries.
