Anthropic is broadening its partnership with the General Services Administration (GSA) through a new agreement. The agreement gives government partners a 40% discount on Claude Enterprise, Claude for Government, and the Claude API. This is the first time the discount covers every product surface. It applies to purchases made directly from Anthropic today, and to purchases through cloud providers in the coming months. State, local, tribal and territorial governments are also eligible.

Anthropic is also launching a dedicated program to help agencies implement Claude and get more value from it. Anthropic's private sector customers commonly use programs like this. Anthropic plans to bring those best practices to its public sector partners in the coming weeks.

About 500 US federal, state, and local government organizations now use Claude. Weekly active users of Claude for Government have grown roughly eightfold since February. Usage across federal civilian agencies has grown about 20-fold in a year. These organizations run some of the country's most important systems, usually with tight budgets and long procurement cycles. The agreement is designed to support that work, so they can apply Claude to hard problems without a large upfront commitment.

The discounts are estimated to save the government $1 billion. Agencies face no minimum spend commitment and pay only for the usage they consume.

How Claude is helping public servants get more done

Government agencies are using Claude on some of their most important challenges, such as managing backlogs, records and forms, and modernizing old code. Examples include:

  • Utah gave Claude Code to 34 developers across 10 state agencies. 80% had a working environment within 30 minutes. 71% reported saving 20+ hours by the end of the four-week pilot.
  • A US state CIO confirmed that the team responded to a ransomware attack in 8 minutes with Claude. The usual response takes 2-3 days.
  • A US federal security team used Claude Mythos to detect and patch a vulnerability in about two days. The flaw would have allowed takeover of a critical production system. A human penetration test the month before had missed it.
  • A cybersecurity professional at a major agency found and patched bugs in critical financial systems.
  • A US state IT developer moved nearly 900 API methods to a new framework in two days. The project had been scoped for a month.
  • A US state IT director used Claude Code to document 12 legacy code repositories. The work mapped 467 database tables and flagged 27 risks.
  • More than half of US states, some of the largest localities, and some of the country's largest critical infrastructure operators participated in Anthropic's SLTT cyber defense program.

Meeting government security requirements

Agencies can use Claude for their most sensitive unclassified work. Claude for Government offers Claude's coding and agentic capabilities. It has near-feature parity with commercial offerings at a FedRAMP High authorization level. It became generally available on September 30.

Agencies building their own tools can use Claude through Amazon Bedrock or Google Cloud's Vertex AI. On Bedrock, Claude is authorized for FedRAMP High. Select models are authorized for DoD IL4 and IL5 workloads in AWS GovCloud. On Vertex AI, Claude is authorized for FedRAMP High.

Claude Enterprise is in process for FedRAMP Moderate authorization through the FedRAMP 20x program. This marks the next step in how Anthropic is bringing the same technology available commercially to the government.
