Anthropic is introducing, in beta, a new way for users to reflect on and refine how they use Claude. In Anthropic's interviews with users, a common theme that emerged is a desire to better understand how AI can be integrated into daily life - how often someone should use AI, how it can be used most effectively, and when it is suited to a task versus when it is better left to a human.
Anthropic built this feature to help answer these types of questions. It lets users easily track and visualize how they use Claude and decide whether that time aligns with their goals. The reflection dashboard can be found in Settings on Claude for web or the desktop app.
Seeing Patterns and Shaping Them
The reflection begins with a summary of how a user has been interacting with Claude, covering key topics, usage patterns, and the types of tasks frequently worked through.
Users can look back on their Claude chat activity over the past 1, 3, 6, or 12 months.
The reflect feature provides a breakdown of when Claude is used most and what that time was spent on. Anthropic plans to add a view of how much total time has been spent using Claude soon.
The reflection also invites users to step back and examine the role Claude plays in their life. It periodically surfaces questions like, "What's one thing you want to keep doing yourself, even if Claude could do it faster?" and gives users the chance to talk it through with Claude.
Within the dashboard, users can also set quiet hours or schedule a nudge to take a break from using Claude after a certain amount of time. Both are reminders of the user's own preferences and can be dismissed.
Building AI Skills That Support Original Thinking
Users can use their reflection to build new skills and sharpen how they work with Claude, using the 4D AI Fluency Framework:
- Delegation: Setting goals and deciding whether and how to engage with AI
- Description: Effectively describing goals to prompt useful AI behaviors and outputs
- Discernment: Accurately assessing the usefulness of AI outputs and behaviors
- Diligence: Taking responsibility for what is done with AI and how it is done
The report gives users a summary of their Claude activity across each dimension, with examples of how they tend to collaborate with Claude - like noting that they often rework email drafts in their own voice, or delegate tasks only after settling the strategy themselves. The reflection also offers practical suggestions, like starting a Project instead of needing to re-explain the context of ongoing work.
Privacy and Sensitive Topics
The reflection does not draw from incognito chats, nor does it pull in underlying files from connected tools. For example, if a user asked Claude to summarize their inbox, that summary may come up in the reflection, but the source emails would not. Any conversation connected to a health integration tool is left out of the insights entirely. The information and insights in the reflection stay there and are not used for any other purpose. More details on Anthropic's privacy practices are available here.
Anthropic built this tool to be a reflection of how users interact with Claude. For some users, this may include sensitive or more personal conversations. In developing this tool and Anthropic's approach to these topics, the team worked with digital media and wellbeing experts from the MIT Media Lab's Advancing Humans with AI (AHA) program, the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children's Hospital, and the Family Online Safety Institute. Sensitive conversations can still appear as part of the reflection, but only at a high level.
Getting Started
This tool is currently available in beta for Free, Pro, and Max users who have memory turned on. Users can open Settings in Claude on the web or the desktop app and select the option to reflect on their usage to generate a report. If a report cannot be generated, it may be because Memory is not turned on. Reflecting on Cowork conversations will be available soon.
